Decide what to raise
- Layers produce eggs over 18–20 months and need patient capital.
- Broilers reach market in 6–8 weeks but margins depend on feed price.
- Cockerels and noilers suit rural markets and longer cycles.
Fix your capital
- 100 layers from day-old needs about ₦450k–₦600k including feed to point of lay.
- 500 broilers needs about ₦950k–₦1.2m for a full 8-week cycle.
Choose a clean location
- Away from other poultry farms to reduce disease pressure.
- Access to clean water and good ventilation are non-negotiable.
Build before birds arrive
- House, feeders, drinkers, brooder, and a quarantine area must be ready.
Find a vet before you need one
- Ask farmers in your area which vet actually shows up.
